For families with children considering Raleigh real estate and
concerned about the educational system in Raleigh communities, rest
assured that Raleigh offers the finest in public schools. With over 150
schools in the Wake County Public Schools System, your children will
have many options to choose from. Raleigh houses 84 elementary (K-5)
schools, 28 middle (6-8) schools, and 17 high (9-12) schools.Raleigh’s Growing Schools:Because Raleigh communities are growing so quickly each year, the schools are as well. Around 4,000-5,000 new students enter the Wake County Public Schools System each year, which often sparks an opening of a new school to accommodate the arrivals. This influx of students every year has also necessitated that some (49 of 156) Wake County schools operate on a multi-track year-round schedule. What this means is that students, while still in school for the typical 180 days per year, have alternate breaks to the traditional summer break. Students in year-round schools enjoy 15-day breaks after every 45 days of attending school. This unique and innovative system allows Raleigh schools to accommodate the increasing number of students every year. Transportation to Schools in Your Raleigh Community:Many parents make decisions on Raleigh real estate related to the home’s distance from a school; often, the more convenient, the better. Thankfully, all Raleigh students who are more than one and a half miles from school—as well as all students with special needs—are provided with bus transportation to and from the school.Special Opportunities for Raleigh Community Students:While North Carolina’s rigorous competency standards (as required by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study) ensures that your children will get an excellent education in all of Raleigh’s schools, the Wake County Public Schools System also offers special educational experiences with its Magnet Schools programs.Magnet schools in Raleigh communities have been improving and expanding ever since the program began in 1982. Wake County now offers a variety of magnet options for students, including but not limited to schools focusing on the Creative Arts and Sciences, International Studies, Active Learning and Technology, or Museums; programs for the Gifted and Talented, International Baccalaureate, University Connections, and Montessori; and schools with a Center For Spanish Language/IBPYP. The Magnet schools program was started to create more culturally integrated schools and to better support the diverse communities in and around Raleigh, as well as to offer special educational opportunities to students and maximize students’ use of excellent school facilities. Because it is a program within the larger school system, interested Raleigh students must apply to attend a Magnet school. For more information on the Magnet schools system, or to apply, visit http://www.wcpss.net/magnet/index.html. Raleigh School Achievements:
In an era where student
performance on standardized tests is necessary for the schools’
success, parents considering buying Raleigh real estate would be
comforted to hear that the Wake County schools have been consistently
scoring higher than the state average on the writing tests. Scores have
improved every year for the last three years, an incredible
accomplishment for both students and teachers alike.
